I feel bad that I keep jumping ship at random times, but maintaining constant updates is difficult with a day job.

For anyone curious, my reason for disappearing this time is justified (I swear!).

I started an internal paid internship at my company working in the learning department. Anyone that's worked at a major corporation should be familiar. Those computer trainings you have to take quarterly? Yeah, I'm making those.

But as an extra bonus, when I came here I found out they're interested in gamifying their lesson plans and had no idea how to start. Well guess who's the only person in the whole department that's made video games? (Don't strain yourself).

So I've started introducing game design to the higher ups. I do have some cutie 3.14 pixel girls to show for it I'll eventually post, but most of my efforts have been devoted to coding and designing. It's kind of nice to be able to call myself a game developer as an actual title. It's like, barely true. But I was paid to make a video game so I'm counting it on any resume from here on out.

I recently downloaded Inkscape too, and I'm learning vector graphics. Not everyone is as enthusiastic about pixel art as I am, so I need to diversify. I'll probably post some attempts of that at some point too.

I do miss just making my own stuff, and I plan on making more stuff soon. But for now I'm gonna go be a corporate-loser.

See ya around

Hey people of Deviantart! Just wanted to post something that shows I'm alive and well. As you may have noticed, I've started posting a bit of early game art here and finally breaking out of my dark, quiet cocoon of an apartment after the past month of busy work.

For those who were unnaware, I recently picked up Gamemaker Studio and started getting to work on designing my first video game. It's something I've wanted to do for years and always told myself things like "Once I've done pixel art for a few years, I can start working on something." or "I've only just started learning code, I shouldn't start until I've taught myself a language like C# fluently". I'm really grateful to have found Gamemaker, and it's been a remarkable tool. I feel I've been pushing myself to learn how to code adequately (albeit in a very specific language I can't use anywhere else) and I was able to make a functioning prototype very quickly.

That being said, I will continue to try to be active on the site, posting a couple sprites/screenshots here and there (though certainly not everything.) and I'll try to keep you guys updated as to how it's going.

If you guys have any feedback/prior experiences you want to share with me, please feel free. This is the first game I've ever made and I'm going to make some very silly mistakes. Anything that you guys catch early on is greatly appreciated :D

Btw. Here's a screenshot of the game so far. Ignore the ugly purple/green platforms, they're a bit naked atm for level design purposes.

I think the natural progression for most pixel artists is to work their way into 2D game design. I had originally intended to get my start through Pygames or other forms of Python-based game development platform, then I saw that Gamemaker studio was free instead of $50 like it used to be and quickly jumped ship. I'm still going to continue learning Python, though I am happy to just start jumping into game design and getting a feel for it.

That being said, while I'm getting used to gamemaker and working through it's tutorials so I know what the hell I'm doing, I may not be posting as frequently as I have been. At the moment I'm only working through tutorials with pre-made sprites, but I'll be sure to keep active as much as I can.

Honestly, I'm not sure what I'll be doing with this. Game design has only been a very recent curiosity of mine and I'm not sure what will come of it for me. But I'm always happy to explore new artistic mediums, and with everything that goes into making games (design, sound, mechanics, animation, etc) I feel like it'll be a true challenge and it will hopefully be one I enjoy.

Thanks for the support, everyone. I hope I can start sharing more work with you all soon :)
